Teachers,students and textbooks are the three major basic elements in class teaching.Teaching materials are not only related to teachers' "teaching",but also students'"learning",and the smooth development of Chinese international education is also dependent on teaching materials.The Chinese Course,a classic teaching material for Chinese as a foreign language,is deeply favored by Chinese learners at home and abroad.Based on the six textbooks of Chinese Course(the third edition)as the research blueprint,the paper takes all the characters in the three volumes of the teaching materials as the research object to systematically classify and collate all of them by literature method,data statistics method and figure image analysis method.Through careful combing,characters in textbooks are grouped into four categories,namely,characters identified by code AB,specific character with names,characters with social identity,and characters as first-person"I"(we).Then,detailed data are collated for each type of characters,and then their characteristics are summed up according to the data,so as to have a full understanding of the basic situation of all the characters in the Chinese Course.In the study on the characters of the teaching materials,it is found:(1)Characters identified by code AB mainly appear in dialogue texts which are relatively short and whose content is simple and daily,with shorter dialogue and less information.There are no difference in importance,correlation or obvious character feature between these characters in the dialogue.In addition,through the study on supplementary information such as text and illustrations,the author also found that,among characters identified by AB,some of them have references,while there will also be complete or incomplete correspondence between these characters and the specific characters with names in the teaching materials.(2)Specific character with names are the focus of this study.These characters mainly appear in the medium and long dialogue texts,and a small part of them in narrative essays,with more appearances and more personalized features.Through the collation of the relevant data,it is found that their number are equal in gender and nationality,and the relationships between these characters are obvious.Specific character with names in the teaching materials mainly involve foreign students Mary and Mike who are studying in China,and their Chinese and foreign teachers,students and friends.Due to the obvious difference in importance of such characters,the author made a more specific and detailed interpretation of five main characters.(3)There are not many characters with social identity in the text,basically set up for the content of the text topic or assisting other textbook characters in certain dialogues or activities,with less personalized performance,and there are also some misrepresentation or inaccuracy in their professional identities.(4)Characters as first-person"I"(we)appear more in a relatively long dialogue and narrative prose,with certain personality,but"I"sees a lack of consistency in different texts.Only a small part of"I"is correspondent to characters with names.Based on the comprehensive understanding and analysis of the characters in the teaching materials,the author made a reflection on its character design,and further puts forward some suggestions beneficial to the future compiling of the characters of the Chinese teaching materials:1.To integrate the character types in teaching materials and build a network for these characters;2.To grant different importance to these characters in design,and deepen the development of characters in a continuous way;3.To focus on the characters shaping and the clothing details;4 To keep character design in line with the times.
