Translation In Global News Under The Guidance Of Peter Newmark's Theories

The rapid development and continuous upgrading of technology have brought us increasingly deepening globalization,which has pushed forward the fast and efficient communication of global information.Considering this situation,the author notices that the significance of the translation of global news has gradually become outstanding.Hence,except the literature translation,domestic translators should also place special emphasis on the study and analysis of the translation of global news.The Economist,an authentic English weekly magazine,is known for its accuracy of illustration,high-quality of text,and credibility of information and so forth,which make it become compulsory reading material for highly qualified intellectual and elite at home and abroad.But,apart from a small number of official translations of the passage in The Economist,a majority of that was still in English version.Accordingly,the author of this report translated five passages of The Economist's On the Cover,which still have no official translations published.Moreover,these five passages have one same topic,i.e.the impact on people's social life brought by the development of technology,which is also conducive to the discussion on the translation of this sort of global news.On the basis of Peter Newmark's translation theories,semantic translation and communicative translation,the author deliberately concludes the methods and strategies in the translation of global news,including the adjustment of the structure and word order of long sentences,the reconstruction of semantic information and sentence logic,and the preservation of global news' language style and so on.After reading a list of relevant translation references,the author of this thesis,with the help of corpus and bilingual dictionary,rendered source text into Chinese,and solved the problems appeared during the process of translation.These difficulties have clearly demonstrated the differences between English and ChineseIn the process of translation,the author of this thesis,to keep the unique textual features of The Economist,meticulously analyses its words,sentences and language style,and grasps relevant background information.Through flexibly using the semantic and communicative translation theories,the author of this thesis has studied translation cases in the aspects of the preservation of original image,the rearrangement of lexical usage and the reconstruction of sentence structure.Moreover,by concluding the pros and cons of these two translation theories after the case study,the author of this thesis evaluates the choice between the semantic translation and communicative translation in global news translation,in hope of uncovering the benchmark of the choice of these two translation strategies and offering valuable reference to the studies on global news translation.
