This paper is an English-Chinese translation project report. The source text comes from Chapter 6 to Chapter 9 of the novel Donald Duk,a bildungsroman written by Chinese American writer Frank Chin. The novel is a study part of "Study of Ethical Literary Criticism on Chinese American Bildungsroman",a branch of Guangxi Philosophy and Social Science Planning Projects. The head of the project entrusted the writer of the report to translate Chapter 6 to 9 from English to Chinese, with approximately 10530 English words. The Chinese translation will be as research reference for the project.Donald Duk mainly tells about the story of a 12-year-old Chinese American boy,Donald Duk,who is influenced by the mainstream American culture and discriminates against everything related to Chinese. After a series of events,Donald Duk realizes the true Chinese culture and then accepts his Chinese identity. The translated text of the project is mainly about what happens to Donald Duk on the first day of Chinese New Year in the Chinatown of San Francisco, which can be classified to literary translation, novel translation specifically. The report covers project description, guiding theory, preparation before translation, case studies and conclusion. The writer of the report chooses Communicative Translation Theory as guiding theory, proposed by English translation theorist Peter Newmark, which focuses on the readers of the target language obtaining the same effect as the original readers, and pays attention to readers'response of the target language. The writer has more freedom to paraphrase the original text and make adjustments to sentences. In case studies, the writer makes deep discussion on the translation of non-standard English words, irregular English syntactic patterns and culture-loaded words,as well as how to reproduce the original style. She also analyzes the specific application of translation strategies, such as addition, deletion, transference of sentence structure and so on.On the basis of faithfulness to the original source, the Chinese translation tries to achieve the same literary aesthetic effect as the English text. Finally, the writer summarizes the experience and limitations of this translation, hoping to provide references for future novel translators, especially those devoting to Donald Duk.
