Living in the period of late Qing and early Min,Chang Zanchun was first-degree scholar in the late Qing dynasty and great intellectual in the period of Min.The study of artistry in the middle and late period of Qing dynasty focused on metal and stone.Besides,the excavation and research of metal and stone stimulated the flourishing of epigraphy,enriched calligraphic artistry theory as well as broadening the creation space of calligraphy.The purpose of Chang Zanchun’s study of inscriptions on inscriptions on inscriptions on inscriptions on inscriptions on inscriptions on inscriptions on inscriptions on inscriptions on inscriptions on inscriptions on inscripti.Chang Zanchun’s understanding of the biography of stones includes the classification of the study of stones,the breakdown of previous statements,and the idea of preserving the essence from the rough.The practical inheritance of metal and stone included passing down rubbing,depicting,reprinting,compiling,collecting tile character and rubbing and so on.All these things represented Chang Zanchun’s enthusiasm and pursuit towards calligraphy.Chang Zanchun commented on the masterpieces of epigraphy such as Ruan Yuan’s Theory on the Calligraphy School of the South and North as well as epigraphy in the North and Post in the South.People said the two masterpieces were groundbreaking while Chang explained had origins.Bao Shicheng’s Yi Zhou Shuang Ji exaggerated Deng’s school and tended to study art.Kang Youwei’s Guang Yi Zhou Shuang Ji contained a lot of aspects so that it deserved to be called masterpiece.I sincerely stand in line with the comments from Chang Zanchun.What’s more,Chang Zanchun gave his comments to seal character and official script calligraphers:Deng Shiru started the new discipline and put forward different schools of seal character.Wu Xizai’s masterpieces were out of restraints but not wild,and his calligraphic style was distinct and strict.Zhao Zhiqian had talents but lacked of wilderness.Hu Shu adhered to the rules and regulations but was too strict.Yang Du’s calligraphy was majestic but also contained mediocre course.Chang Zanchun’s assessment may have some faults but I abide by his distinctive points.Chang Zanchun’s thoughts on calligraphy lie on pursuing smooth and upright.Meanwhile,modem people should not only learn something from ancient people but disobey spirits of this era.Calligraphy is changing with times thus calligraphic style cannot be same.All calligraphic styles of Cahang Zanchun are outstanding.For instance,his seal character is normal;lines of character are upright and smooth;artistic conception is elegant and plain.His regular script seem to be smooth and steady but the fact is unique and full of different forms.Furthermore,his regular script is not only beautiful but grand and strengthening.Chang Zanchun not only owns professional writings on metal and stone,but possesses practice of calligraphy,which belongs to typical academic calligrapher.Chang Zanchun enjoys a pivotal position and great influence in the calligraphic history of Shanxi province in the period of min.
