Scars of Independence is a masterpiece of Holger Hoock,a well-known researcher at the Royal Society of History. In his work, varied and rich in content,Hoock exposes the violence hidden behind the historical story, showing the new origin of the founding history of the United States.Based on the English-Chinese translation practice of Chapter 2 and case analysis, the author discusses some major issues and difficulties on the translation of historical text, including proper nouns, polysemy, long and complicated sentence, passive sentence, textual cohesion and coherence.Under the guidance of functional equivalence, the following solutions are put forward:the principle of accuracy can be referred to for proper nouns;the principle of flexibility can be adopted for polysemy;strategies of following the original sentence, dividing the long sentence according to sense groups, adding some hidden information and adopting comprehensive translation methods, can be applied to translation of long and complicated sentence;strategies of adopting explicit or implicit passive sentences and Chinese active sentence can be employed to translate passive sentence;textual cohesion and coherence can be achieved by grammatical and lexical cohesive devices.Based on her personal translation experience, the author aims to promote the study of English-Chinese translation of historical text.
