A Translation Report On The Opera Names Of The Chinese Opera History:Opera In The Early Qing Dynasty

This report is based on The Chinese Opera History,focusing on the translation of a large number of opera names appeared in its seventh chapter.This book systematically records the origin,formation and development of Chinese opera in various periods.The source text features with a large number of opera terms,allusions,culture-loaded words and ancient Chinese and so on.Besides,the seventh chapter involves about 100 drama names.Firstly,this report introduces the background of the translation project and the source text,and then describes the translation processes including preparation,translation and proofreading.The difficulties in opera names translation include the translation of allusion,cultural background,rhetoric and so on.In order to provide more foreign opera lovers with a channel to understand Chinese opera,the methods of literal translation,free translation,transliteration,transliteration plus explanation and literal translation plus explanation are adopted in this translation project.Meanwhile,this report aims to explore the rules of opera name translation and provide references for future translators in such English texts.
