A Translation Report On The Column Of Health And Fitness Of The Guardian From The Perspective Of Skopos Theory

This translation practice is based on the author's first translation of eight popular health science articles of The Guardian with the German translator Vermeer's Skopos theory as the guidance theory.The author wants to explore the western health-promoting methods and opinions by translating western popular health science texts and consequently have a better grasp of the differences between Chinese health culture and western health culture,and to discover more translation methods to improve the author's translation ability at the same time.This report is constructed in four sections.The first section is the background and introduction,which provides background information,research purposes,and academic significance.The second part is project description,including a brief sketch of the translation project,pre-translation preparations and post-translation improvement.The third part,case analysis,will be the major part of this report.Firstly,the author makes a brief introduction about three principles of Skopos theory.And then,translation case analysis is roughly divided into three aspects: the translation of long and difficult sentences,the translation of culture-loaded words,and the resolution of imagery conflicts.First of all,there is a huge disparity of sentence structure between Chinese and English.Chinese sentences tend to be short and concise,while English sentences are always long and complex.Therefore,the handling of long and difficult sentences becomes the central focus of this translation report.Secondly,the culture-loaded words are difficult to find the corresponding counterparts in another language to encompass their full extension.Thus,this paper proposes various translation strategies coping with distinctive types of culture-loaded words to realize the complete transmission of cultural information.Thirdly,the same imagery is endowed with different meanings in different cultures.So,this paper will discuss how to use translation methods and strategies to solve imagery conflicts.The last section is the conclusion,summarizing the enlightenment and shortcomings of this translation report.
