This is a translation report on Towards a General Theory of Translational Action written by Hans J.Vermeer and Katharina Reiss who were German linguists and scholars. The book divided into two parts illustrates Skopos theory and Text typology. It was not until 1984,when the book was first published, that German translation scholars began to pay attention to the new approach — Skopos theory.Skopos theory has become the most representative and influential translation theory in contemporary Germany. This translation report is based on the parts translated by the translator and combines with the actual cases in the translated text from the three levels of lexicon, sentence and text to introduce the specific situation of the translation practice. This translation practice chooses functional equivalence proposed by Eugene Nida as the theoretical support, and uses Newmark's semantic translation and communicative translation methods to analyze how to achieve the maximum equivalence between the source text and the target text under the guidance of functional equivalence theory. It is proved that functional equivalence theory is applicable to the analysis of English-Chinese translation of academic monographs. In order to achieve equivalence in meaning,it is necessary to change the form of translation. With the support of functional equivalence theory, the translator has great initiative in translation. The purpose of this translation report is to provide a basis for promoting translation theory research and guiding translation practice.
