The Chinese Repository, established by an American missionary—Elijah Coleman Bridgman in late Qing dynasty, was the first comprehensive English journal of sinology in Guangzhou. It started in China in 1832 and ended in 1851,and it experienced 20 years around the first Opium War,introducing every field of China to western people in different angles, including Chinese history, religion, law, politics, agriculture,Confucian classics and literature etc..Therefore,The Chinese Repository was renowned as encyclopedia of China. It had published many articles about Chinese history, culture and society and abundant translation and commentaries of Chinese traditional classics. This paper selects parts of translation and commentaries of Chinese history and traditional classics from The Chinese Repository.Based on author's back-translation of the said text, the translator finds many culture-loaded words in it.According to the features, the translator aims to explore the translation of the culture-loaded words through foreignization and domestication theories so as to keep the balance of the source and target texts and reach the integration of Eastern and Western cultures. The report is divided into four parts: pre-translation preparation, translation practice plans, analysis of the translation and conclusion of the translation project. In the process of the back-translation analysis, the translator meets many strange English words and Chinese cultural words. Therefore, the translator divided the culture-loaded words in the text into five categories: the ecological culture-loaded words, the material culture-loaded words, the religious culture-loaded words, the social culture-loaded words and the linguistic culture-loaded words. When back-translating this kind of words, the translator will deploy translation strategies such as free translation, cultural substitution, amplification, transliteration and literal translation etc.combining with domestication and foreignization theories.
