Vague Syntactic Structures In Chinese And Their Interpretation Skills

Since Chinese and English are two completely different languages,interpreters are required to deal with the interpretation process at the spot both quickly and cleverly,where a lot obstacles resulted from their disparities of history,cultures and linguistics may come out.The press conference of “Two Sessions” held each year serves as a significant diplomatic platform for the country to send new messages to the world.In this case,interpreters should be equipped with strong abilities of both languages as well as resourcefulness.Interpreters in this situation should achieve includes no less than three goals: to deliver messages in a correct and complete way,to make audience fully understood,to facilitate the cross-culture communication effectively.Skopos Theory,the core idea from Functionalist Translation Theory in Germany,provides a frame for this thesis,saying that it is all that the speakers convey that interpreters need to realize in another language under the rules of purpose,coherence and fidelity.With the case study of press conferences from 2014 to 2018,it has been figured out that there were some vague syntactic sentences in Chinese which was from speaker,adding up pressure and difficulties to the interpretation work.If interpreted literally when those vague cases occur,it would turn out to have problems such as unexpressive words,misleading messages and considerable lack of key points or cultural implications concerning the audience,all of which do harm to the event.As a consequence,vague syntactic sentences in this thesis would be classified into the following types as unclear logical connections,vague anaphoric subjects,incomplete structures and redundancy.To well tackle these problems,the result of this thesis demonstrates that the interpreters have grasped useful skills and taken good advantages of them,referring to supplementation,reformation,transformation and abbreviation.Depending on these skills,those ambiguous structures mentioned above could be settled smoothly so as to ensure not only a professional interpretation work but a successful press conference.
