Studies On Translation Of Words And Expressions With Chinese Characteristics From Xi Jinping's Speeches From The Perspective Of Skopostheorie

In recent years,China has achieved great development and accomplishments in its international status and influence,and has been playing a prominent role globally.On the one hand,China expects and desires to be better understood and further recognized by other countries around the world.On the other hand,the countries all over the world are eager to learn more about China's economic and social accomplishments.Such desires contribute very much to promoting the English translation of publicity and diplomatic materials,among which the activity of translation of words and expressions with Chinese characteristics in Xi Jinping's speeches on the Belt and Road Initiative is particularly significant.Because these speeches are the most authoritative data and medium giving information to the world of China's internal circumstance as well as cover a lot messages on China's politics,economy,military situation and cultural development.Skopostheorie emphasizes translation as an activity with specific aims and diplomatic translation of the words and expressions with Chinese characteristics in Xi Jinping's speeches on the Belt and Road Initiative is a purpose-driving activity.As a result,perfect translation of the words and expressions with Chinese characteristics in Xi Jinping's speeches on the Belt and Road Initiative is a window for other countries to know more about the situation in China.Guided by Skopostheorie,this thesis is based on the 15 selected texts from Xi Jinping's speeches on the Belt and Road Initiative from 2014 to 2017 published in China Daily website.The significance of doing the research on words and expressions with Chinese characteristics in Xi Jinping's speeches on the Belt and Road Initiative in this thesis can also be expressed theoretically and practically.Theoretically,the author attempts to check if Skopostheorie can be applied in guiding diplomatic translation,test if the translation methods used under the guidance of Skopostheorie are proper,and enrich the content of Skopostheorie in the translation of words and expressions with Chinese characteristics.Practically,by conducting this research,the author tries to put translation theory into practical translation in order tohave a good mastery of translation methods in translating the words and expressions with Chinese characteristics and conclude a set of guiding rules for future practical translation.This thesis initially classifies about 100 selected words and expressions with Chinese characteristics in Xi Jinping's speeches on the Belt and Road Initiative into three categories and analyzes the translation methods applied in those words and expressions with Chinese characteristics.It is found that there are four translation methods applied to the words and expressions with Chinese characteristics.They are literal translation method,generalization method,literal translation plus annotation method and free translation method.Then,this thesis analyzes the typical examples from the perspective of Skopostheorie,which reflects the application of the three principal rules of Skopostheorie.Finally,from the perspective of Skopostheorie,this thesis puts forward some tentative solutions to the mistranslations,wrong translations and omission of translations about the words and expressions with Chinese characteristics in the selected texts from China Daily website.The research finds that Skopostheorie is applicable to the translation of the words and expressions with Chinese characteristics in Xi Jinping's speeches on the Belt and Road Initiative and can provide the theoretical basis for diplomatic translation.By using typical examples,this research demonstrates and proves the availability and validity of Skopostheorie in guiding the translation of the words and expressions with Chinese characteristics in Xi Jinping's speeches on the Belt and Road Initiative.
