A Report On E-C Translation Of Long And Complex English Sentences

The title of this thesis is A Report on E-C Translation of Long and Complex English Sentences——A Case Study of the Biography in Richard Posner(Excerpts),actually,it aims at researching some translation techniques and methods of long and complex sentences in English-Chinese translation of biography.Since there are many long sentences in this excerpt,so I regard the translation of long and complex sentences as the research subject of this thesis.Although domestic experts have made lots of researches about long and complex sentences,it is still rarely to write a translation report based on the understanding of long sentences and the approach to explain English sentences with rational Chinese to comprehend the meaning of text.Biography has many unique stylistic features,and it is featured in reality and objectivity,but there are some literary characteristics in the original text,such as several expression means of humor and hyperbole,so different ways of expression need to be translated with different techniques.The main body of this report is completed according to the order of introduction,syntactic structure and translation principles,description of translation process,case analysis of translation and conclusion.In the part of introduction,it presents the theme and purpose,background information,significance and framework of the whole text,while the second chapter briefly states some differences between the syntactic structure of English and Chinese and translation principles of long and complex sentences.In the part of description of translation process,it explains details of task preparation,translation process,and difficulties of first draft and explanations of these difficulties.On the whole,the report analyzes sentence constituents in those long and complex sentences under the guidance of differences between the syntactic structure of English and Chinese and translation principles of long sentences,and it also involves seven translation methods,including amplification and omission,sequential translation,adaptive translation,split translation,reverse translation,recasting and synthetic translation.Besides,there are various situations in each method to be dealt with different solutions.This translation practice of the excerpt helps me deepen the awareness of biography and know well the reasonable application of English and Chinese in the language structure,thus I can flexibly use translation methods and principles of these two languages to show characters of the hero properly without changing the meaning of the original text.
