Under the background of globalization, various exchanges between countries are increasing. As an important way of cultural communication, the documentaries can transmit information, express emotions, and spread cultures.Based on the national “the Belt and Road” strategy, the documentary Headway on the Maritime Silk Road has important epochal significance. With 32 individual stories, the documentary Headway on the Maritime Silk Road shows a close connection between China and the outside world in terms of economy, culture, religion, humanity and geography. The subtitle on the screen is limited by time and space, and should be in accordance with video and sound. Its text language also has the features of information complementarity, colloquialism and artistry.Reception Aesthetics Theory, emphasizing the readers' response, regards the“expectation horizon”as the criteria for readers' evaluation, which can best guide this subtitle translation.Under the guidance of the Reception Aesthetics Theory, the translator summarizes the translation strategies adopted in this translation from three aspects: cultural differences, linguistic differences and subtitle features. In terms of cultural differences, literal translation, free translation and annotation are applied accordingly. As to linguistic differences, the translator adopts dynamic and static transformation, generalization and concretization transformation, active and passive transformation and hypotaxis and parataxis transformation. In light ofsubtitle features, the strategies of omission, amplification and structural symmetry are implemented. It is to make the translation more in line with the readers' expectations. The translation cases show that in the translation of documentary subtitles, these translation strategies based on Reception Aesthetics Theory can largely achieve the desired aesthetic effect in target language.
