This report is based on the English-Chinese translation of Men,Fathering and the Gender Trap published in 2017.By analyzing the source text from lexical, syntactic and textual level, the translator summarizes the characteristics of the text as follows. In the lexical level, the phenomenon of terminology and polysemy can be easily found throughout the text.In the syntactic level, passive voice as well as long and complicated sentences are widely employed. In the textual level, the text shows distinct gender awareness. In addition, effective devices are used for the realization of cohesion. All of the features could be regarded as translation problems.Later, the above-mentioned problems are tackled under the guidance of Peter Newmark's Communicative and Semantic Translation Theory.Specifically speaking, the translator deals with the lexical problems by analyzing the contexts and features of the source text,to determine the meanings of the words.Besides, the translator refers to published academic papers to ensure the accuracy of terminology. The translator deals with the syntactic problems by using various translation techniques,to adjust the sentence structures. And the translator deals with the textual problems by exploring ways to save the original writing style. Finally, after self-proofreading,the translator invites her classmate to do the peer-proofreading,as a guarantee of the quality of translated text.To summarize, this report records the specific process of the translation practice, with the purpose of providing referential significance for future translation practices guided by Peter Newmark's Communicative and Semantic Translation Theory.
