A Report On C-E Translation Of Exploring The Cities-Chengdu(Excerpts)

Presenting regional characteristics of different cities in China is significant when introducing Chinese culture to the global stage.As one of “Yi Zhongtian's academic works on Chinese Culture”,Exploring the Cities gives an introduction to the unique cultural connotations of different cities in China.This translation project is from Exploring the Cities--Chengdu.Chengdu has a long history of more than 2,300 years,which contributes to its solid cultural accumulation.After years of precipitation,it has got an irreplaceable cultural label which distinguishes itself from other cities in China,such as the “Slow Life” culture,a gentle pace of living in Chengdu,reflecting the cozy and comfortable life that Chengdu people enjoy.This translation project has been conducted under the guidance of Peter Newmark's Text Type Theory.Vocative function is mostly presented,and informative function and expressive function are contained as well in this book.Thus,the translator has mainly adopted communicative translation to make it more readable.The translator has encountered many obstacles in this translation project,including culture-loaded words,four-character phrases,proper nouns,Chinese run-on sentences,dialects and so on.Under the guidance of Newmark's text type theory,the translator determined to adopt domestication strategy mostly.And some translation methods are applied to deal with the difficulties,such as paraphrase,idiomatic patterns,imitation.When it comes to the regional culture characteristics,the translator has read a lot of parallel texts which can provide her with sufficient background knowledge of the culture in China.Additionally,the aesthetic tastes and reading habits of the target language readers are also considered in this project.This is a good opportunity to boost the extension of city cultures to more English learners who are interested in it.The report consists of six parts: task description,theoretical framework,translation preparation,translation process,quality control and conclusion.
