This translation report is based on the non-literary translation material which is chosen from Gender and the Politics of Gradual Change—Social Policy Reform and Innovation in Chile written by Silke Sttab. This book takes the political and social reforms in Chile as examples from a gendered perspective to illustrate how gender influences politics and why the change made by the social reform is gradual rather than radical. In consideration of the characteristics of the source material, the translator adopts Nida's functional equivalence for guidance in translation. The difficulties and problems are solved in accordance with the theory in the whole process.According to the theory, the essence of translation is to seek for the equivalence between the source text and the target text. The equivalence of the reading effects on information between the readers is keen concerned.Problems in lexicon, syntax and discourse are encountered in translation process.Accordingly, terminology, differences in sentence structure and coherence are considered in the former three dimensions. To solve these problems, translation methods, particularly free translation, conversions, additions and deletions are conducted thus forming a complete translation ultimately. This report consists of five parts,in which the whole translation process is discussed and practical translation methods are summarized and abstracted.Besides, reflections on the problems to be solved are put forward in the report.
