This report is based on the author's E-C subtitle translation practice of American sinologist James Cahill's online open course Gazing into the Past.The series of courses aims to introduce the major research achievements on Chinese ancient painting art in western countries,which has great significance in advancing cross-culture exchanges and promoting the current Chinese painting study.In the process of translation,the author finds that professor James Cahill's teaching language is elegant,refined and possesses rich and profound connotations,carrying great aesthetic values to please the audience.Therefore,on the basis,this report seeks to study on the subtitle translation from the perspective of Liu Miqing's translation aesthetics,and attempts to achieve effective aesthetic representation from aspects of language formal system and non-formal system with the consideration of innate technical constrains of subtitle.In the report,the author summarizes all translation difficulties into three categories,including the formal problems from phonetic level,lexical level and syntactic level,the non-formal problems of representing the beauty of aesthetic images,artistic conceptions and cultural specifics,and the time and space constrains in subtitle translation.Under the guidance of translation aesthetics,the author explores specific methods to represent language aesthetic values in this project,which include using rhythmic repetition,selecting proper diction,restructuring syntactic structure,matching equivalent images,amplifying aesthetic conceptions etc.,and hopes to provide reference for the future studies of culture-themed subtitle translation,advance the study on aesthetic representation in culture communication and improve the effect of cross-culture exchanges. |
