Chu Ci is one of the origins of Chinese romantic literature. It has been translated since the late 19th century.Among all of its English versions,David Hawkes's Ch'u Tz'u—the Song of the South, which is based on Wang Yi's Chu Ci Zhang Ju,is a relatively comprehensive one in west.It includes the translations of all seventeen volumes. His translation is both academic and literary, and shows a sense of beauty in terms of language and sentiment. This thesis tries to study on the aesthetics representation in Hawkes's translation of Chu Ci.Based on the translation aesthetics theory, this study mainly explores the aesthetic representation in formal system and non-formal system of Hawkes's translation.First of all, this thesis discusses Hawkes's preservation of beauty in the rhythm and structure of Chu Ci in terms of sound and structure.Through the use of rhetorical devices such as alliteration, reduplication, antithesis and parallelism, the translator maintains the form of the original to a certain degree, presenting the beauty in formal system.Second, this thesis analyzes Hawkes's translation from image and sentiment in non-formal system.Hawkes applies literal translation, free translation, transliteration and annotation to translate different images in Chu Ci,which not only retains the cultural features of source text, but also makes the contents more comprehensible. As for the sentiment,Hawkes highlights various emotions in the original text by using amplification, inversion and conversion. From the overview of Hawkes's translation of Chu Ci,although Hawkes translates Chu Ci in free form,it can still be observed that the aesthetic values of Chu Ci are greatly reflected in his translation after analyzing it from formal system and non-formal system.Hawkes adopts various translation artistic techniques and methods to present the beauty in different aspects of original text, while his version can be regarded as classical one,and has certain reference value for the English translation of Chinese classical poetry.
