This thesis is based on the analysis of the translated text of Talk to the Paw,a novel written by an American author called Melinda Metz.The novel is characterized by its rich and vivid contents and humorous language.Therefore,referring to the characteristics of the novel and the source text,the translator chose the Context Theory as the guiding theory,so as to solve some problems that occurred in the translation process.In the process of translation,the problems encountered by the translator could be divided into different categories.There were not only lexical problems such as word meaning selection and the translation of modal verbs,but also problems of character shaping,rhetorical devices translation,and stylistic choice.This report intended to explore into the strategies of translating vocabulary,syntax and rhetoric in the novel.For the problems in translation,the translator mainly used methods such as extension,conversion,omission and amplification.In addition,under the guidance of the Context Theory,the translator also took into account the characteristics of both Chinese and English,as well as the context and cultural background of the source text,so that the translation could be as faithful as possible.The main body of the thesis consists of five parts: introduction of the translation practice,translation process,introduction to and application of theory,case analysis and conclusion,with emphasis on case analysis.In the process of translation,the Context Theory played a great role in guiding the translation practice.It not only helped the translator to master the translation method of the novel,but also helped the translator realize the importance of both Chinese and English language competence on novel translation.
