A Report On English-chinese Translation Of The Future Of Ship Design(excerpt) Under The Guidance Of Newmark's Text Typology Theory

With the continuous development of technology,the translation of scientific English is particularly important in learning advanced foreign technology and developing China's science and technology.The author of the paper excerpts the book,The Future of Ship Design for translation practice.It is a text of shipping industry in technical English.In the translation of technical English,the first principle is "authenticity first." British translation theorist Newmark combined the function of language with its translation,developed the Text Typology Theory,and summarized the text genre of "expressive text","informative text" and "vocative text".Newmark also indicates the "emphasis" of each text and the "role" that the author played in the translation process.According to this theory,the text of this translation practice is a kind of “informative text”.For a range of difficulties encountered in the translation process,including the translation of ship terminology,the paraphrase of general vocabulary in scientific texts,and the translation of passive sentence and adverbial clauses,and how to achieve coherence and closeness in translation.In this report,the author analyzes the translation methods and strategies from the perspectives of vocabularies,sentences and discourses,so as to make the translation more suitable for the reading habits of the target language readers in terms of the structure and expression.Thereby,the original information can be accurately conveyed,and then the communication of science and technology can be realized.The translation practice report includes task descriptions,translation processes,case analysis,and translation summaries.This article also provides a platform for communication between China and foreign countries on ship design.
