The Translation Of The Parenthesis

This report is based on the translation of The Roots of Radical Islam in Central Asia,which was a social-scientific article published by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.Parenthesis of different semantic functions plays a significant part in this article.However,they bring a lot of trouble to the translation practice.This report takes the translation of the parenthesis as the object of study,trying to summarize proper translation methods under different conditions.This report first introduces the main content and linguistic characters of the passage.Then it explains the different definitions of parenthesis in different books and illustrates that the idea of parenthesis in this report is different from what has been defined in some books.In this report,it means the element that is independent from main clause and sometimes has syntactic relations with other elements but it is not the main parts of the sentence.According to different standards of classification,the report introduces different categories of parenthesis and analyzes its characteristics in English and Chinese comprehensively.Then,it focuses on the characteristics of the four type of parenthesis with different semantic functions in both English and Chinese,namely explanation,supplementation,transition and comparison as well as causality.According to the different characteristics of these four kinds of parenthesis in English and Chinese,the report will clarify the translation methods should be used in each type with examples.Moreover,when we translate,we also should consider the expression habit of Chinese,the logic of the whole sentence and the context.This report analyzes the translation methods that could be used in parenthesis of different semantic functions and provides reference for the related translation,and the specific features of parentheses in discourses should still be taken into consideration before applying the summarized translation methods.
