Since its introduction by Halliday&Hasan in 1976,Cohesion Theory has reverberated among the linguists, and shows its great significance in guiding translation practices.Interestingly,it is found that such guiding function is much more commonly seen in C-E translation practices, while Cohesion Theory in E-C translation practices,by contrast, has not been fully studied as it should be.So this paper tries to fill this gap, focusing on explicitation strategies in E-C translation from the perspective of Grammatical Cohesion. The original text of this translation project is an extract from the book Why We Can't Afford the Rich?.This book is not so professional that most of its target readers are those who lack relevant knowledge background.Obviously, the target text must be clear and coherent, but the frequent use of long sentences and cohesion devices in the original text makes it difficult to be achieved. In this sense, the great role of Cohesion Theory in C-E translation can be verified in two aspects as follows. On the one hand,Cohesion Theory emphasizes a translator's awareness of a "Text",which means a translator should break the limits of one sentence or one structure when doing translation. On the other hand, the research framework of this paper together with necessary theoretical basis can also be provided to deal with the translation of such cohesion devices.Indeed, the shifts of cohesion devices will affect the explicitation level of a text. The lack of attention to such cohesion devices is not good for producing a target text of better coherence, thus not good for target readers with little relevant background to have an accurate understanding of the real intention of a source text. This is also true of E-C translation based on the case study included. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to analyze the obstacles to the explicitation of those cohesion devices when translated from English to Chinese, and hence to conclude some effective strategies respectively, taking Why We Can't Afford the Rich?as an example.Consequently, for the purpose to be achieved, this paper takes advantage of the research framework and theoretical basis offered by Cohesion Theory,Grammatical Cohesion Theory in particular,to discuss the obstacles mentioned above from the perspectives of Reference,Substitution,Ellipsis and Conjunction. This has been done in the light of explicitation standards inferred from its definition. Then, with the awareness of a "Text"and related theoretical foundation, several explicitation strategies are accordingly presented at last as one of the most important conclusions of this paper. For the other conclusions, this paper has not only justified the great significance of such study on explicitation strategies of E-C translation practices, but also made a relatively systematic summary of these strategies under the instruction of Grammatical Cohesion Theory.Last but not least, this paper highly stresses the concept of a "Text" cautioning against translating any word or any sentence with no reference to the context.
