With the increasing international exchanges, the demand and requirements for interpreting activities and interpreters are growing. One of the important factors in judging the quality of speeches in consecutive interpreting is fluency. One of the decisive indicators affecting the fluency is pause.Whether the delivery is smooth, length and times of pauses in the interpretation is one of the key factors.A positive pause is good for communication and better conveys the meaning of the speaker.Negative pause is also the improper pause to be discussed in this article, which is not conducive to the transmission of information. It will cause the audience to interfere and misunderstand the speaker's meaning and intention, thus should be overcome and eliminated. In the past two years of interpreting study and practice, the author has found that while performing alternating interpretation, she often appears to be improperly paused.after studying improper pauses in the material which is from a mocking conference with the theme of “Lin Yifu and Zhang Weiying's debate on industrial policy”,combined with the theoretical research of other scholars, the aim of this thesis is to explore the definition, causes and classification methods of improper pauses in Chinese-English consecutive interpreting. There are many ways of classification. In previous studies, there are different classification methods at home and abroad.Improper pauses can be divided into silent and vocal pauses. As the name suggests, the former is a longer period of silence, while the latter include repetition, adding words, and so on.In terms of causes, the problems mainly occurred in the following areas: listening and comprehension, bilingual translation of corresponding vocabulary or expressions,note-taking and translator's own language habits. To achieve better delivery, attention should be paid in taking notes, analyze the logical relationship of the paragraphs, and deverbalization. It is hoped that this will improve the interpreter's performance, improve the quality of interpretation, and provide some reference for others.
