The Application Of Amplification In English Translation Of Ship Safety Management Manual

The Ship Safety Management Manual is one of the most important documents for ships,which covers various aspects including responsibilities,operation norms and safety management.According to ISM Code,when domestic ships are sailing in the international waters and berthing in the international ports,English version of the Manual is required due to the need of PSC inspection.Therefore,it has become a priority to improve the accuracy in translation.Since differences emerge in the structure and semantic expression between English and Chinese,translation from the perspective of cognitive view is chosen to solve these differences so as to reproduce the original ideas as accurately as possible.This dissertation will explore the English translation of the Ship Safety Management Manual from a cognitive view.Most of the sentences in source text are prescriptive sentences with simple structure,clear meaning,concise style,and omitted some elements which can be recognized through semantic association in Chinese.However,some omissions may result in information losses or structural errors in the translation.Considering the reading group and the reader's purpose and in order to make the translation conform to English expression habits as well as accurately express the original information,this dissertation mainly adopts amplification method to reveal the implicit information.The translations are made to achieve cognitive equivalence with the source text by means of adding logical relations,time sequence and participants.
