A Report On E-C Consecutive Interpreting Of CDB Gas Project

In recent years,with the development of engineering technology and increasing awareness of globalization,the communications and cooperation between Chinese enterprises and foreign enterprises have become more and more frequent.The demand for interpreters in engineering has also been increasing accordingly.In Mar.2019,Chuandongbei(CDB)Gas project officially started to transfer the operatorship.It has attracted a large group of on-site interpreters,so as to eliminate the key barriers along the transferring process.The practice report is based on the author's interpreting experience in CDB project during the period of transferring operatorship.Under the guidance of the Linguistic Adaptation Theory,the author illustrates the interpreting difficulties and corresponding interpreting strategies in the process of English-Chinese consecutive interpretation.The author reviews the history and background of CDB project and introduces the requirements for interpreting tasks;Pre-interpreting preparations involve physical preparation,technical preparation,the collection of clients' information and theoretical preparation;For case analysis,the author seeks to illustrate how “inference from context”,“zero interpretation”,“visual transformation” and other interpreting strategies are applied in the interpreting practice at lexical,syntactic,psychological and cultural levels.Last but not least,the author also summarizes the thoughts and inspirations she has gained from the practice: Solid listening and identifying abilities and note-taking techniques are seen as prerequisite for conducting consecutive interpreting;Project interpreters are expected to maintain awareness of always getting prepared for the next interpreting task,such as attending various kinds of meetings and taking an initiative to communicate with personnel in the same project about technical questions;English,as an instrumental and basic subject,may not be better used unless it is combined with other specific disciplines.Therefore,it is necessary for interpreters to obtain the professional knowledge in a specific field besides improving their English level and interpreting skills.It is thus easier for inter-disciplinary talents to meet the demands of the interpreting market.
