A Report On The C-E Translation Of The History Of Chinese Dress(Excerpts) Based On Newmark's Theory

With the continual enhancement of China's comprehensive national strength and more and more countries show approval of the "The Belt and Road Initiative",China's cultural soft power is increasingly improved.As a representative of the excellent traditional Chinese culture,the Chinese costume culture is attracting the attention of more and more people from all over the world.Therefore,the translation of Chinese dress culture texts is of great significance.However,there is still little research on the translation of Chinese traditional costume culture.Based on Newmark's translation theory,this report focuses on the translation of Chapter 2(The Dress of the Qin and Han Dynasties)and Chapter 4(The Dress of the Sui,Tang and Five Dynasties)of The History of Chinese Dress.There are more than 20,000 Chinese characters in total of these 2 chapters.It aims at exploring the strategies and techniques of costume culture translation.According to Newmark's text type theory,the research takes facts as main focus.It is a kind of social science explanatory text with information-based functions and expressive functions.Therefore,the text should be translated from the perspective of communicative translation on the basis of semantic translation.This report is divided into five chapters:The first chapter introduces the background,details,objective and significance of the translation task;The second chapter describes in detail the key links in the process of translation projects through three time periods,namely,before,during and after translation.The third chapter elaborates Newmark's text type theory,semantic translation theory and communicative translation theory.The fourth chapter is the main part of this report and it focuses on the case analysis.Based on text type theory,semantic translation theory and communicative translation theory,the author discusses the difficulties in translation projects from the perspectives of terminology,sentence and discourse.The fifth chapter is a summary of the translation practice.Generally speaking,from the perspective of terminology translation,if the translation obtained by literal translation is accurate and with reasonable structure and acceptable form,the semantic translation method should be adopted;From the perspective of sentence and discourse translation,for sentences with rhetoric suitable for the English context and with clear logical structures,semantic translation methods such as literal translation and sequential translation should be used;for Chinese classical sentences and modern Chinese sentences,whose syntax is significantly different from English one,communicative translation methods such as addition,deletion,reorganization,hypotaxis and reconstruction must be used.Based on the translation theory,this report analyses and discusses the translation practice of The History of Chinese Dress.It can not only test one's own learning achievements at the postgraduate level,but also provide research cases and experiences for the translation of Chinese traditional dress culture.Meanwhile,it is hoped to strengthen the exchange of clothing culture with countries around the world,to promote the development of China's clothing industry,and to make contributions to the mutual learning of Eastern and Western civilizations.
