A Report On The Sentence Reconstruction In The English-Chinese Translation Of Merchant Mariners At War

With the speeding up of the economic globalization,the world shipping market is rapidly moving towards integration.In this context,China is also actively striding forward from a large shipping country to a shipping power.In the process of building China into a shipping power,overseas experience needs to be learned,thus the translation of maritime texts will have an important part to play.This translation report is based on Chapters Four to Seven of the book Merchant Mariners at War,which mainly describes the experience of the merchant mariners and convoys at sea.In the course of English-Chinese translation practice,a lot of sentences need to be translated with the method of sentence reconstruction..Therefore,the author of this report will conduct a case study on the sentence reconstruction in the English-Chinese translation,with the most typical sentences taken from Merchant Mariners at War as research data.The main research findings are as follows:As the Chinese language is paratactic,whereas the,English language is hypotactic in nature;sentence reconstruction is widely used in English-Chinese translation,which is fully shown in the English-Chinese translation of Merchant Mariners at War.The author of this report summarized five appropriate translation methods for sentence reconstruction,namely,sequence translation,the change of the voices,antonymic translation,combination translation,and contracting translation,with the aim of translating sentences from English to Chinese in an accurate and fluent way.It is hoped that the present study is conducive to the translation researchers of maritime texts and those working in the shipping industry,and is also hoped that this research has some practical value for the teaching of maritime translation.
