The concept of "context" was put forward by the British linguist Malinowski, its core idea is to seek the best relationship between the original and target texts. At present, context is divided into three types:linguistic context, situational context and cultural context.Impromptu speech is the common form of TV interview. It is often characterized by strong orality, such as repetition, redundant information, etc.Besides the basic characteristics, impromptu speeches in TV interview have additional characteristics:entertaining words and restricted contents of speeches. These render the consecutive interpreting of impromptu speeches in TV interview more demanding. This thesis aims to figure out the influence of context on the E-C consecutive interpreting of impromptu speeches in TV interview. To this end,the author takes a control experiment. Two groups of student interpreters, eight members in total, from a MTI program of a university in Beijing are selected as experimental subjects, and three recordings, respectively focusing on the three categories of context as experimental materials. In the experiment, the interpreters are equally divided into the control group and the experimental group. With providing context background for the control group only, both groups are required to carry out consecutive interpreting on the three materials. After analyzing the performance of the two groups, the experiment finds that the performance of the control group is better than that of the experimental group. It is thus concluded that the three types of context all have huge impacts on the understanding and processing of the source language and the organization of the target language, and context is of great importance to the consecutive interpreting of impromptus speeches in TV interview. It is therefore necessary to cultivate students' awareness of context analysis in interpreting teaching, and context should be deemed as an important factor to deal with impromptu speeches in interpreting practice.
