This translation report is based on the first two chapters of Unfinished Business. This book on political negotiations was written by Guy Olivier Faure,a sociology professor at Sorbonne University in Paris. In the book,Faure summarizes the theoretical and practical lessons learned from the failed negotiations, and tries to provide a reference for negotiators by means of the analysis of specific cases. The first two chapters mainly describe the typical cases of failed negotiations, and many terminologies, idioms and complex long sentences are used in this part. The translator hopes that Chinese readers can acquire the knowledge of political negotiations and historical events related to international negotiations by reading the Chinese version. This report adopts two general translation strategies of Vinay and Darbelnet's translation model,i.e.direct translation and oblique translation, and applies the seven specific translation methods of these two general translation strategies to the translation of terminologies, idioms and complex long sentences. The report explores the practical application of each strategy, and then chooses the most appropriate translation method for the specific case.Direct translation includes borrowing, calque and literal translation, and oblique translation covers transposition, modulation, equivalence and adaptation.Through the analysis of typical cases, the report shows the guidance of seven translation methods in the translation of political negotiation texts. It is found that Vinay and Darbelnet's translation model can not only ensure the faithfulness and accuracy of translation, but also successfully realize the communicative function of translation. In the translation of terminologies, direct translation plays a dominant role, while oblique translation is mainly utilized to guide the translation of sentences and idioms.
