In recent years,Phonics has become a burgeoning teaching method in English teaching of middle schools in China.It abandons the traditional English teaching method which requires students to memorize words by rote,advocating that students memorize words by using the rules of letters and their related combinations in word pronunciation.This method improves students' ability to spell words,makes memorizing words simple and interesting,and greatly increases students' reading efficiency,as well as listening and speaking competence.Although English teachers in cities have generally adopted Phonics,there are still some problems in the practical application of this method in rural middle schools,which causes the students in these areas to be weak in English spelling,and show little interest in learning English.The application of Phonics to English teaching of rural middle schools can improve students' interest and efficiency in learning English.In this study,literature review was used to sort out and analyze the related researches on Phonics.Based on the theory of language transfer,Piaget's theory of cognitive development stage and critical period hypothesis,the author studied the current situation and countermeasures of applying Phonics to English teaching of rural middle schools.The author selected nine English teachers and 195 students from Jiujiang Middle School as research objects.Through interviews,questionnaires and other research methods,the author investigated the current situation of rural middle school teachers' understanding of Phonics and its application,and analyzed the difficulty of applying Phonics and the main influencing factors.The author also investigated the current situation of the students' understanding,attitude and mastery of Phonics.In order to carry out in-depth analysis and discussion,the author also made classroom observations to find out the problems existing in the practical application of Phonics.Through investigation and research,the author found that the application of Phonics is worthy of affirmation: teachers recognized Phonics and had a positive attitude towards it.The main problems existing in the application of Phonics are: teachers' own recognition and understanding of Phonics was not enough;class hours were not enough and there was no special textbooks;students did not fully and effectively participate in class and etc.Combined with the theoretical basis of this paper and the requirements of the new curriculum standards,the author put forward some suggestions on the application of Phonics to English teaching.Firstly,relevant departments should pay attention to the construction of Phonics curriculum system in some ways such as expanding Phonics class hour and selecting systematic and scientific spelling textbooks.Secondly,some measures should be taken to improve teachers' professional level,such as providing on-the-job training,and urging teachers to strengthen themselves.The third is to improve the participation of students and especially their effective participation.
