A Study On Pretermission And Mistranslation Based On A Report Of Simulation English-Chinese Consecutive Interpreting On Hillary Clinton’s Speech At 2018 Graduation Speech Of Yale University

This report is a practice report based on a simulation consecutive interpretation.The selected material is Hillary Clinton’s 2018 speech at Yale University’s Graduation Ceremony.The theme of the speech is "Keeping Resilience and Vigilance Forever".The content of this speech involves politics,literature,various social organizations and so on.Public speech has unique language styles,and English for graduation speech is characterized by its concise and standardized expression,targeted and inspiring words,with personal emotions and colloquial features.However,after systematic review of domestic English-Chinese simulation consecutive interpretation practice report,most of the materials selected in their practice reports involve interviews and conferences,and there are few simulation practice reports on public speech,which still deserve much attention and further investigation.In this simulation practice report,after systematic review of consecutive interpretation and the relevant research on interpreting and consecutive interpreting,based on the data from recorded materials,transcribed texts and note-takings in this simulation practice,the author identified the problems of this simulation interpretation into four aspects: complete pretermission or mistranslation,pretermission or mistranslation on corpus details,inaccurate sentence expression and semantics inversion.It is found that the main reasons for these problems include that the author still have some shortcomings in language listening recognition,notetaking and short-term memory ability,and the proposed solving strategies are summarized,mainly including how to enhance listening recognition and short-term memory ability,and how to process long and short sentences and methods to systematic training of notes and accumulation of knowledge.This consecutive interpreting simulation practice report may enrich pretermission and mistranslation research and make some contribution to the development of interpretation research.Meanwhile,it is significant to avoid such problems and difficulties effectively so as to improve the quality of interpretation.
