A Practice Report On Roles Of Escort Interpreters In Sports Events

On January 23 rd,President Xi paid a visit to Yunding Resort which will be used as one of the venues for the Winter Olympics in 2022.And he proposed“Development should be seen in snow sports”.With the popularization of snow sports and the successful bid for the Winter Olympic Games in 2022,China has seen a great increase of snow sports events and activities in both national and international levels in recent years.In international events with different cultural and language background,there is a great need for good escort interpreters to provide on-site interpretation services.They play important roles in helping with organization and preparation before and during the events to make sure everything goes smoothly.To do the job well,escort interpreters should be fully aware of their roles and give full play to the subjectivity of interpreters.In this report,the author hopes to discuss the roles of escort interpreters in sports events under the guidance of subjectivity of interpreters,based on the firsthand interpretation practice of serving as the escort interpreter of the Chinese general director and foreign technical delegate during the 2016 World Championship of Snowboarding.This interpretation task lasted for three weeks.The report describes the content and tasks based on real experience in the interpretation practice and it studies three roles of escort interpreters in sports events by analyzing concrete situations: the “gate keeper” of communications;coordinator and assistant.The author hopes that this report can provide relevant reference for the following studies on the roles of escort interpreters and interpreters who are involved in sports events to help them do a better job.And the author also hopes to contribute to the development of snow sports in China.
