A Report On The English-Chinese Translation Of Nominalization Structures In Amazon.com Inc’s 2018 Annual Financial Report

The differences of thinking between China and the West determine that Chinese language emphasizes parataxis and tends to use more verb clauses,while English emphasizes hypotaxis and tends to use more nouns and prepositions.Therefore,there are a large number of nominalization structures in English texts,especially in business English texts.As such,it is of great significance to master the translation of nominalization structures in English texts into Chinese.The text selected in this translation practice is excerpted from Amazon.com Inc’s 2018 Annual Financial Report,which is a business English text,with a large number of nominalization structures.Taking nominalization structures of the text as the research subject,the author has written this report via documentary research method and descriptive research method.In the process of translation,the author,divides nominalization structures in Amazon.com Inc’s 2018 Annual Financial Report into three levels:lexical,phrasal and syntactic level.In this regard,the author adopts three translation techniques:part of speech conversion,amplification and upgrading translation.Among them,part of speech conversion can be divided into the conversion from noun to verb,adjective,preposition and adverb.Part of speech conversion refers to the conversion of part of speech in translation due to different idiomaticity and characteristics of language structure between English and Chinese.Amplification means adding necessary words,phrases,clauses or complete sentences to the original text so as to make the translation conform to idiomaticity of target language in grammar and language form,and to be consistent with the original text in terms of cultural background and word association.Upgrading translation is the translation technique that Chinese uses simple sentences to express actions described by nominalization structures in English.By summarizing the English-Chinese translation techniques of nominalization structures in this text,and the relevant professional terms,we hope to provide some enlightenment and help to the translators of this kind of text,some reference methods for the translation of nominalization structures in Business English,and reduce the probability of mistranslation of this kind of text.
