A Study On The Cross-cultural Adaptation Of Nigerian Students In Nigeria

With the development of China's economy and the promotion of educational influence,the scale of students studying in China is expanding.As the largest economy in Africa,Nigeria sends hundreds of international students to China every year,and the number is growing steadily every year.The cultural distance between Nigeria and China is relatively large,and the cross-cultural adaptation of Nigerian students to life in China affects the learning and living conditions of this group.In this paper,a questionnaire survey and an in-depth interviews were used to investigate the cross-cultural adaptation of Nigerian students in China.The questionnaire adopts the questionnaire framework of ward and Kennedy,and is adjusted according to the characteristics of Nigerian students.The questionnaire topics include personal information,social adaptation,learning adaptation and psychological adaptation.The interview content is designed on the basis of the questionnaire,in order to have a further understanding of the relevant issues.A total of 53 valid questionnaires were obtained and 10 Nigerian student living in china current were interviewed.Through the statistics and analysis of the questionnaire and interview structure,it is found that the overall situation of cross-cultural adaptation of Nigerian students in China is acceptable,but there are also many difficulties.In terms of social adaptation,students have difficulties in adapting to the weather,bad social behavior,local diet,understanding of Chinese jokes and humor,etc.;in terms of learning,students feel that they are sometimes given unfair treatment by some teachers,and the attention of the school's overseas students' needs to be improved;in terms of psychological adaptation,they are mainly homesick and have no sense of belonging in china.On the basis of obtaining the situation and problems of cross-cultural adaptation of Nigerian students in China,this paper analyzes the influencing factors of intercultural adaptation from the aspects of personal factors and social cultural factors,and puts forward some suggestions for improving the intercultural adaptation of Nigerian students.Nigerian students must make the appropriate preparations before coming to study in China,including understanding the relevant situation in China,making specific plans for studying in China,and maintaining an open and positive attitude.To improve the understanding of Chinese culture,schools should offer relevant cultural courses and organize rich cultural activities.Students should also attempt to try new local dishes and improve their adaptation to local diet.Students should strive to establish good social support,maintain communication and exchanges with the Nigerian embassy,consulate,Nigerian communities and associations in China,expand their circle of friends,make more Chinese and foreign friends,and join appropriate religious groups and other legal social groups.
