The text selected for the translation practice is the novel Mr.Scobie's Riddle written by Australian female writer Elizabeth Jolley.The novel is about Mr.Scobie Martin' life in the sanatorium.The selected part of the novel mainly tells stories in chronological order,combined with flashbacks,describing the life and memories of patients in St Christopher and St Jude,including the protagonist Martin Scobie's experience of childhood and youth and current situation.In addition,the writer also describes some details of characters like Mr.Hughes,Miss Hailey and so on.Characters' emotions in the hospital are revealed through the description of grotesque,implying the miserable situation of marginal group—the lonely elderly.The descriptive forms of the text are various,including portrait description,environment description,action description and dialogue description in which translations of pronouns,portrait description,puns,repetitive expression are main difficulties of the translation.According to the characteristics of the difficulties,the translator chooses appropriate translation strategies: making the demonstrative pronouns explicit,using Chinese fourcharacter idioms and idioms,liberal translation and usage of exclamatory sentence.The translator hopes that this study will enhance scholar's understanding of Australian literature and provide reference points for the translation research of Elizabeth Jolley's novels.
