This report is about the translation of Lao Lu,a short story from An Anthology of Wang Zengqi's Short Stories. The author,Wang Zengqi is a contemporary Chinese writer.Wang advocated realism, national traditions as well as pure and natural emotion. Most of his novels are about Chinese customs and daily life, because he thought that customs embodied people's love for life.Lao Lu is a narrative short story, which depicts natural landscapes in the rural area as well as the virtue and merits of Lao Lu.This report is based on the Skopos theory. In the theory, skopos rule is the most elementary and principle rule that translators should obey.It means that the purpose of the target text is given high priority. The translator can adopt appropriate translation strategies for the translation purpose.Coherence rule can ensure that the translation is readable and acceptable to the target readers.Fidelity rule can guarantee that the target text is faithful to the source text.On the basis of the Skopos theory, the author conducts the study at word, sentence and discourse levels. At word level, with Chinese idioms and culture-loaded expressions, the author applies liberal translation, transliteration plus liberal translation, and transliteration plus explanation. At sentence level, the author adopts methods such as sentence-reconstruction,which includes the adjustment of sentence order, the addition of conjunctions,sentence-combination and sentence-separation and voice-transformation.At discourse level, with folk songs and poems, the author preserves the style by means of alliteration, rhyme and contrast;with dialects, the author adopts literal translation plus liberal translation;with rhetorical devices, the author mainly applies literal translation, literal translation plus liberal translation.Through the translation project, the author hopes to help English readers better appreciate Chinese short stories. Moreover, the author hopes that this thesis may contribute to the study of the English translation of Chinese short stories.
