This Report is based on the E-C translation of Daniel Alarcón's short story The Provincials.Fictions with an average length of about ten thousand words are classified as short stories. And the source text has 11,661 words,so it can be classified as a short story. The short stories are characterized by short length, simple plots, concentrated characters, and particular structures,so does The Provincials. This source text mainly presents a series of stories that happen when the hero Nelson and his father go back to their hometown to deal with some postmortem details of his grand-uncle Raul. The translation of the whole short story is under the guidance of Hans Vermeer's Skopos Theory. And this report is divided into four parts. The first part is a brief introduction to the translation task, including introductions to the source text and its author Daniel Alarcón,the objectives of this task and its structure. The second part mainly introduces the translation process, including pre-translation preparations(the selection of a proper theory--Skopos Theory, the collection and study of theory related books and papers, and looking up related cultural background of the source text),the quality control during the translation, and post-translation management. The third part is the case study, which is mainly about the translation methods and skills selected by the translator to complete this task under the guidance of the three principles of Skopos Theory(Skopos Rule,Coherence Rule, and Fidelity Rule). The last part presents the deficiencies and enlightenments in the process of this translation task.
