A Study On Code-switching Of Mandarin And Dialectal Chinese In Speech Communication

The code-switching phenomenon is one of the universal phenomena in people’s language life.Within Mr.Xing Fuyi’s(1994)"exterior-interior-value" small triangle as the research framework.This article takes the entertainment program "Day Day Up" as a sample to explore the code-switching of Mandarin and Dialectal Chinese.The linguistic exterior form of this type of code-switching is observed at first.The changes in the exterior form are mainly represented by the dialectal codes.There are seven major dialects and their sub-dialects takes part in the code-switching and the speech fragments of Dialectal Chinese in the corpus we collected include four grammatical,which show diversity as its characteristic.Then the direct impact of Speech Accommodation Strategy on the types of dialect codes involved in the code-switching is discussed.This type of code-switching is mainly caused by the Convergence strategy,much more than that caused by the Divergence strategy.Secondly,after we divide the examples into two dimensions according to the direction of conversion,it is found out that the contents where the speaker switched from Mandarin to dialects and the contents where the switches happened in opposite direction are systematically symmetrical.Based on the discussion above,the last part of this paper is analysis of four main pragmatic values of this code-switching,such as shape the user’s identity,downplay the negative impact of the communication,activate the communication atmosphere with verbal humor and imitation,and reduce the psychological distance between the listener and the speaker.
