A Report On The Translation Of Linguistic Reality(Excerpt)

This report is based on the translation of Section2,Chapter 1 of Linguistic Realities: An Autonomist Metatheory for the Generative Enterprise(published by Cambridge University Press).Linguistic Realities is an English academic book on language philosophy.The book is divided into two parts,each consisting of three chapters.The first part discusses the philosophy of reality in linguistics and linguistic instrumentalism under the framework of methodology.The second part mainly talks about placing language objects on the background of psychological reality,social reality and abstract objective reality.George Steiner's hermeneutic translation theory is one of the influential translation theories,and the core of which is four steps,namely,“trust”,“aggression”,“incorporation” and “compensation”.The theory holds that the translator gets the original text,because he believes that the text in his hand has a certain meaning and has the trust to do so,so the translator invades the text,deeply understands its connotation,absorbs and creates the translation,and finally adjusts appropriately to realize the complementarity of the original text and the translation.Through this translation practice,the translator really feels that when it comes to translating,not only must the translator master the cultural characteristics and background knowledge contained in language,but also choose the appropriate translation theory according to the characteristics of the original text;and then the translator uses this translation theory as a guide to choose appropriate translation skills and translation methods.In translation practice,only when these conditions are met can a better translation be made.
