| As Sino-foreign cultural exchanges have increased,Chinese museum has become an important platform for foreign visitors to have a better understanding of China.Hubei Provincial Museum features the chime bells of Marquis Yi of Zeng, renowned as “the Eighth Wonder of the World” that attracts a large number of foreign visitors each year.Taking the role of promoting cross-cultural communication, museum interpreter volunteers play an important role in disseminating Chinese culture. This report is based on the author’s Chinese-English consecutive interpreting practice during her internship in Hubei Provincial Museum.Skopos Theory serves as a guidance for this report. There are three rules of Skopos Theory of which the skopos rule is viewed as the leading rule for translation. The fidelity rule is subordinate to the coherence rule and both of them are subordinate to the skopos rule. The core concept of Skopos Theory illuminates that the purpose of the overall translation behavior constitutes the main factor to be taken into consideration in the translation process. Thus, interpreters should grasp and clarify the specific purpose in the interpreting context, and adopt proper interpreting strategies accordingly. The author classifies the interpreting materials according to the three rules of Skopos Theory, namely, the skopos rule, the coherence rule and the fidelity rule.Through case analysis,it has been found that omission and transliteration with extra explanation can be used according to the skopos rule;paraphrasing and contextual addition can be employed according to the coherence rule;literal interpreting and conversion can be applied according to the fidelity rule. The author uses these six strategies to cope with four major difficulties of this interpreting practice related to cultural differences, logical problems, differences of language expression form and information redundancy. The author holds the view that these strategies are able to help interpreters to realize the inter-lingual transfer, promote effective communication and fulfill the purpose of the interpreting task. This report is expected to provide empirical materials and some references for future study and practice in museum interpreting. |
