A Report On The English-Chinese Translation Of An Academic Paper On Civil Engineering

This report is based on the translation practice of the civil engineering academic article A Review of Alternative Approaches to the Reduction of CO2 Emissions Associated with the Manufacture of the Binder Phase in Concrete.The source text focuses on various alternative methods of binder phase manufacturing in concrete to reduce carbon emissions,which is popular in a typical English for science and technology(EST)text.Currently,with the rapid development of China's modern economic society and science and technology,and the progressively frequent international scientific and technological exchanges and cooperation,the utilization of scientific and technological English translation is becoming more and more extensive.Guided by Skopos theory,this report aims to summarize the translation methods of EST article at the lexical,syntactic and textual level,so as to promote the dissemination of the source text information.This report consists of five parts.The first part is the introduction,which mainly introduces the background,purpose and significance of the report.The second part is the task description,which includes the content and language characteristics of the source text.Academic papers in civil engineering have their own characteristics and rules.At lexical level,a lot of technical terms are used in the source text.At syntactic level,passive sentences and complex sentences are mostly used.And at textual level,the source text is logically coherent,accurate in thinking,and refined in expression,which attaches great importance to logical cohesion and coherence.The third part describes the translation process.The author mainly describes the three stages of pre-translation preparation,translation process and quality assurance.The fourth part is the case analysis,which is the primary part of this report.The author analyzes the difficulties in the source text separately at the lexical,syntactic and textual levels.Wherein,at the lexical level,the author analyzes the translation methods of civil engineering terms,proper nouns,and nominalized words;at the syntactic level,the author mainly discusses the translation methods of passive and complex sentences;at the discourse level,the author separately elaborates the cohesion,coherence and thematic progression in translation to improve the quality of the article.The fifth part is the conclusion.The author summarizes the translation practice and elaborates the gains and deficiencies of this report.For the author herself,she solves some translation problems through this translation practice,which greatly improving her translation skills.Furthermore,the translation experience has been enriched,and the author's understanding of EST articles has been deepened.The author hopes that this report will help general readers to better understand the professional knowledge of civilengineering,and also hopes to inspire more people to participate in the translation of EST articles.
