Under the guidance of Skopos theory, this practice report analyzes the consecutive interpreting provided by the author for the meeting between a researcher from Lincolnshire,UK and an official from the Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of Hunan Province.Through data collection, the author found that Skopos theory is mostly applied in translation practice, but less in interpreting. The author's own practical experience showed that the “Three Rules” of Skopos theory is closely related to the practice of interpreting and has great guiding significance. This report focuses on the flexible application of “Three Rules” of the Skopos theory to guide the interpreting practice. This practice report proposes that in conference interpreting, interpreters should adopt corresponding interpreting techniques according to the actual context to achieve better output. This report is divided into four chapters.Chapter one is a summary of the task, including the elaboration of the pre-task preparation, interpreting process, and post-interpreting summary.Chapter two introduces the Skopos theory, which originated from the German school of functional theory. In the second chapter, the development of the theory and “Three Rules” of Skopos theory, namely the rules of skopos, coherence, and fidelity, are introduced.Chapter three is an analysis of several cases. The author uses typical cases from the transcript of his interpreting record as materials to conduct analysis and summarized effective interpreting techniques to deal with three major problems encountered in the practice, including redundancy, ambiguity, sentence disorder.Chapter four is a reflection and summary of the merits and shortcomings and experience of this interpreting practice.Through analysis, the following conclusion is drawn: To achieve effective communication, interpreters in meetings should be flexible in using different interpreting techniques, such as explanation, omission, blending, reorganization, etc.,to cope with the problems.Through the summary of cases, the hierarchy of “Three Rules” is verified that is the Skopos rule is at dominant position while the Fidelity rule is subordinate. It is also hoped that this practice report can provide a reference for future similar practices.
