The English-Chinese Translation Report Of Sci-Tech Text From The Perspective Of Functional Equivalence Theory

With the development of science and the renewal of technology,today,the world has stepped into the age of science and technology.On the one hand science and technology have not only become one of the hot issues of this age,but also an essential part of our daily life.Spacecraft,submarines,and even mobile payments rely on the power of science and technology.On the other hand,countries over the world are closely connected and need to communicate with each other for continuous progress under the background of globalization.Thus,as one of the themes of this age,the development of science and technology has naturally become a popular topic in the "dialog" of the world.The translation of EST has also become more and more important with this trend.Getting closer to technology helps to make better use of technology.Based on the characteristics of EST,the translator selected parts of How Technology Works,a popular science book,as the translation practice text.The translation practice report was guided by Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory,which includes introduction of the translation task,analysis of the source text,overview of the guiding theory,case analysis,summary and reflection.Under the guidance of Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory,the translator has analyzed problems in the translation process from lexical,syntactic and textual level,found appropriate translation methods through discussing specific cases and put forward some suggestions,which aims to provide reference for translators who are engaged in the translation of EST.Through the translation practice,the translator has found that in sci-tech text,firstly,it is important to translate professional terms and abbreviations and acronyms accurately to achieve lexical equivalence.For the translation of these terminologies and abbreviations,dictionaries and other tools are used to accurately translate them to achieve lexical equivalence.Secondly,it is of great significance to translate passive voices,complex sentences and subordinate clauses properly to achieve syntactic equivalence.The English passive sentences should be translated into idiomatic expressions of Chinese.Complex sentences and subordinate clauses should be cut into short sentences and reorganized according to Chinese expression habits.In addition,the cohesion and logic of the context is crucial to achieve textual equivalence.The translator should maintain the cohesive means used in the original text and represent them in the target text in an equivalent way.In order to be equivalent to the source language,the target language should maintain the features of sci-tech text as accuracy,objectivity and logic.
