The report is based on the Chinese translation of Issues and Trends in Education for Sustainable Development,a document published by UNESCO.The document demonstrates the close relationship between education and the realization of sustainable development, introduces the development of Education for Sustainable Development(ESD)and highlights key issues related to ESD policy and practice. There are many long sentences with complex structure in the document, posing challenges to the translation practice. From the perspective of the differences between English and Chinese, the report discusses the guiding role of the skopos rule, coherence rule and fidelity rule in the translation of long English sentences into Chinese and makes analysis of specific cases.Guided by the skopos rule, appropriate adjustment in sentence order can be made so as to present a target text which conforms to the rules of the target language and to achieve intercultural communication.Guided by the coherence rule, long sentences can be divided according to their meaning groups and appropriate translation strategies can be employed to achieve intratextual coherence.Guided by the fidelity rule, words can be supplemented on the premise of not changing the meaning of the original text as a way to ensure intertextual coherence. The report aims to provide some ideas for the translation of long English sentences by exploring the translation of long English sentences under the guidance of the skopos rule, the coherence rule and the fidelity rule.
