Translation Of Long English Sentences

Long English sentences tend to have rich meanings with a complicated structure,which brings many difficulties to English-to-Chinese translation.An accurate translation of long sentences requires translators not only to have a good grasp of vocabulary,grammar and sentence patterns,but also to possess the ability to render them in target language.Therefore,translators should use appropriate translation strategies to fully bring out the implied meaning and language features when translating long sentences.This report is based on the translation of Chapter Three in the book The Rough Guide to Sweden.The source text mainly introduces destinations in and around Stockholm,the capital of Sweden,to provide information and guidance for tourists and to attract potential tourists through the scenery description.As a travel guide,this book is blessed with the features of tourism text,such as many proper nouns and rhetorical devices,complicated syntactic structures,which are difficult to translate.The Skopos Theory proposes that “the end justifies the means”,and this principle provides the author with the theoretical basis for translation.In the report,the author bases her case study on long English sentences,which she analyzes with a view to rendering them into Chinese using three translation strategies: following the original order,splitting a sentence and rearranging a sentence.In this way,the author tries to provide ideas for translators to analyze and translate long sentences from English into Chinese.Based on the Skopos Theory,this report has four parts – task description,process description,case study and conclusion.Through this translation practice,the author has come to have a better understanding of the translation of long English sentences,which lays a foundation for other translation practices in the future.
