The study of British social history is one of the hot spots in the current academia, which is of great significance to the exploration of socialist sports culture with Chinese characteristics and the development of social culture in China. At the same time, the translation of historical texts helps to broaden the horizons of domestic scholars and promote the development of domestic social science research. The selected text of this translation practice is Chapter 14 and Chapter 16 of We Danced All Night-A Social History of Britain Between the Wars, which mainly introduces the development of British sports and cultural life between the two world wars, and analyzes the realities of British society in a specific historical period. The translator takes the translation of the two chapters as the actual case and the adaptation theory of Jef Verschueren as the theoretical guidance, analyzes the key and difficult points in the process of translation, and summarizes the corresponding translation strategies and methods. The purpose of this translation practice report is to solve the difficulties in the translation of historical texts.Starting from the levels of lexic, syntax and texts, the translator divides the difficulties into the translation of abbreviations, professional terms and slangs, the translation of passive sentences and long complex sentences, the handling of substitution relations and the translation of structural words.According to the Adaptation theory, including contextual correlates of adaptability, adaptability language structures, dynamics of adaptability, the expression habits of the target language system. The translator can promote the accuracy and communication of the translation, and finally achieve the ultimate goal of Adaptation theory, dynamic adaptation. This translation project mainly has the following two significances: Firstly, the topic of this translation project is British social history, taking history as the mirror, through the translation of British social history works,we can summarize someobjective laws that are conducive to the development of culture and sports field from the text, and provide certain reference for the relevant fields of our country.Secondly,Adaptation theory mainly emphasizes the flexible pragmatics of language, while the historical texts emphasize the expression of fixed terms. As a pragmatic theory,Adaptation theory can still play a good role in guiding the translation of English social science texts.I hope this practice report can contribute to the future researches of social science translation.
