An English-Chinese Translation Practice Report On Your Talent And Your Destiny

With the fast pace of life and work,people are increasingly prone to have negative emotions such as anxiety and even self-doubt.It is important that we try to eliminate these negative emotions through various means and attempt to establish a more optimistic attitude toward life.Reading inspirational books can motivate readers and give them confidence and better values in living their life.Considering the use of such books,Isaac John Akagu's Your Talent and Your Destiny has been selected as the translation practice text to encourage target readers,to boost their morale and confidence,and provide some reference for the translation of other similar inspirational books.In Approaches to Translation,Peter Newmark divides the text into three categories:expressive,informative and vocative.Considering the nature of inspirational books in general,the selected text mainly belongs to the vocative text which is characterized by an approach calling on readers to think and to be proactive,thus emphasizing the importance of the readers' involvement.Consistent with the text-type theory,Newmark has put forward two translation strategies: semantic translation and communicative translation.Communicative translation attaches great importance to the expressive effect of the original text as well as the understanding and acceptance of the readers,which is consistent with the vocative text approach.Therefore,the communicative translation theory guided the translation practice.Following the principle of “readers first” in communicative translation,corresponding translation techniques have been adopted at lexical,syntactical and discourse levels,such as amplification,omission,division,combination and so on,so that the target text can achieve the same expression effect as the source text.After the analysis of translation practice,it has been found that inspirational books are a type of vocative text.A communicative translation strategy should be followed and appropriate translation techniques should be adopted to make the target text easy for the readers to read and gain acceptance,thus achieving the purpose of effective communication.Figure 0;Table 0;Reference 30...
