National image carries the history and future of a nation.Shaping a widely accepted and highly praised national image is one of the aims for which the sovereign nation strives. The national image promotional video, which serves as the “window” for the national image, has an important effect on the shape of national image. However,at present, the effort on national image propaganda films done by China has not achieved the expected effect.National image propaganda films, like “Chinese National Image Films of Characters”in 2011,“The Angle” and “Entering the New Era”,have been criticized by some foreign audiences.Which part has problems and results in the bad effect? How should we catch the tool, national image propaganda films,to add colors on the construction of the national image? This article explores the problems happening in the cross-cultural communication of national image propaganda films, using the “One Minute in China” series as a case study from the perspective of African students. It explores the strategies of cross-cultural communication based on the perspective of the cross-cultural communication by using some ways like analyzing literature, combining theories with empirical evidences and focus group. This article consists of five chapters: the first chapter is an introduction, which mainly reviews the research status of cross-cultural communication at home and abroad, national image and national image propaganda films;the second chapter explains the related concepts and theoretical foundations;the third chapter analyzes the “One Minute in China” series based on the rhetoric theory through the development status of Chinese national image propaganda films and communication environment;the forth chapter studies the analysis of “One Minute in China” done by African students in focus groups;the fifth chapter proposed relevant strategies for the cross-cultural communication of national image propaganda films based on the results of chapter three and four.In terms of research conclusion, the author proposed an optimized strategy from the cross-cultural communication of China's national image propaganda films from three levels: communicator, text and audience.Among them, the communicator faces dual dilemma of reality and history, therefore, the communicator needs a politicize improvement and makes the audience's perception of communicator better;as for the text, the national image propaganda films should pay attention to weakening the propaganda color, exploring content through the real China and showing the universal values.Rational thinking is dominant while audiences are accepting the cross-cultural communication. They focus on relevance and the expression of differences. Therefore,we need to pay attention to segmenting audiences according to the differences, facing the existed differences and actively seeking value recognition.
