A Report On English-Chinese Translation Of The Global State Of The Art In Engineering Education(Excerpt)

The practice report is based on the E-C translation project of The Global State of the Art in Engineering Education on commission of UESTC’s Office of Academic Affairs.With a global review of cutting-edge programs in engineering education,the investigation report takes a worldwide look at the future trends of engineering education in order to inform the NEET program held by MIT.As an educational investigation report,on language dimension,The Global State of the Art in Engineering Education is featured by abundant proper nouns,compound words and expressions with cultural and industrial backgrounds.There are also frequently-used complicated sentences for compact sentence structure and accustomedly-used quotes for objectivity.consequently,the original text is objective in description,formal in mode of speech,standard in form,and strict in logic.The purpose of this translation is to remain the original features and language style,accurately convey the information of original text and cultural connotation,and accomplish the aim of communication,finally providing some references for relevant education reform of the commissioner.Therefore,the practice report,with the reference to the Eco-Translatology Theory,analyses the translation of typical language characteristics of the text on linguistic,cultural and communicative dimensions based on the features of the original text,providing corresponding translation methods.The practice report figures out that on linguistic dimension,reconstruction and selecting appropriate form of quotation and other respective methods can be used for the translation of long sentences,quotes and other features;on cultural dimension,some translation methods like concretizing can be applied to respond to the differences on habits of expression caused by distinctions on Chinese/English cultural and industrial backgrounds;on communicative dimension,transformation,explicitation,and other correspondent translation strategies can be adopted to remove understanding and communication barriers,which are generated during the process of translating parenthesis,implicit information,etc.Through summarizing the experience in the translation process,the report hopes to provide some reference and salutary views for the translation of the same or similar text so as to improve the translation quality of investigation reports.
