Along with the frequent international academic exchanges in today's context, the translation of academic texts is playing an increasingly vital role.Translation of academic texts is not only an approach to spread the scientific research achievements, but also a driving force to promote the specialization of translation.Considering this reality, the translator selects the first and second chapters of the linguistic academic paper entitled Mutual intelligibility of Chinese dialects, which has not been translated into Chinese yet,to carry out the English-Chinese translation practice, and then completes this translation report consequently.Since the selected chapters of the source text mainly give an introduction to the general Chinese language situation and the parallel studies on mutual intelligibility at home and abroad, the contents of the source text are be of certain academic value. Therefore, the translation of the source text is conducive to the spread and development of relevant linguistic research achievements. This translation practice is carried out under the guidance of Eco-translatology,which is a translation theory proposed by Professor Hu Gengshen. This translation theory advocates to carry out adaptive transformations from three dimensions,i.e.the linguistic, cultural and communicative dimensions,so as to keep the balance and harmony of the translational eco-environment.From the linguistic dimension, the source text contains a number of professional terms,semi-technical words, complicated long sentences and passive sentences. From the cultural dimension, the source text covers some background information and professional knowledge related to Chinese and foreign languages and cultures. From the communicative dimension, the source text strives to accurately record and deliver the research results, faithfully express the researcher's viewpoint, and present the research data in a clear and intuitive way.In view of the above-mentioned realities, the translator tries to deal with these issues by using the methods of literal translation, disambiguation, reconstruction of long sentences, conversion of passive sentences, omission, addition of footnotes, etc. In this translation process, the translator finds that Eco-translatology can be applied to the translation of academic texts because it can effectively guide the translator to deal with the key and difficult points in the source text. Therefore, with proper cases, this report aims to analyze the guidance of Eco-translatology to this translation practice and propose corresponding translation methods, hoping to provide reference or inspiration for the translation of the same type of texts in the future.
